Borough Market Brings Community Together to Celebrate Platinum Jubilee

London’s iconic Borough Market will be creating a bustling street party feel under its Victorian arches to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee

London’s iconic Borough Market will be creating a bustling street party feel under its Victorian arches to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee – complete with lots of regal bunting, vintage music from the last seven decades and of course – food fit for a queen.

The Market will be dressed in all its Jubilee finery with traders competing for the best decorated stall and offering a range of celebratory dishes to enjoy on site as well as produce to take home for a regal picnic, street party or BBQ over the bank holidays.

With food at the heart of the Queen’s celebrations – from the coronation banquet through to street parties around the country – Borough Market is marking this milestone by commissioning a series of seven new recipes – one from each decade of Her Majesty’s historic reign. Food historian and writer Angela Clutton has put a modern twist on classic recipes inspired by a leading food writer from each decade – ranging from the 50s’ Patience Gray through to the 80s’ Madhur Jaffrey, 00s’ Jamie Oliver and the 2010s’ Yottam Ottolenghi. The new recipes will be printed in a specially created free Jubilee newspaper available to pick up at the Market, as well as via Borough Market’s website and social channels.

Borough Market, itself a much-loved institution in the capital visited by members of the royal family including The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall and Prince Harry, was a wholesale market during the Queen’s Coronation in 1953. The Market remained at the heart of the fruit and veg trade until 1998, when it became a retail market for high quality food.

As a charitable trust, community is an important part of Borough Market and on Thursday 2nd June Borough Market will be holding a Jubilee Community Lunch for 80 representatives from its charity partners and their beneficiaries as well as nearby clubs and groups. Local schools, Southwark Cathedral, United Saint Saviours, zero food waste pioneers Plan Zheroes (who collect from the Market twice weekly) and Young Marketeers’ partner School Food Matters will be bringing young, old and everyone in between together to celebrate in the Market Hall.

For those looking for an extra special gift or who simply want high quality food and drink to celebrate the occasion in style, Borough Market Online will have a range of Jubilee Hampers packed with food fit for queen from its traders, available to order with nationwide delivery. Jane Swift, Interim CEO, Borough Market said; “Borough Market is a charitable trust so it’s important that we mark such a wonderful national milestone as a community – and what better way to celebrate than by bringing people together over a celebratory lunch. Research suggests that spending quality time with others, over a meal, can have a positive impact upon our well-being and we know that Markets across the country create a unique space for economic development and social interaction – creating a sense of community and belonging.

“Borough Market has long been a place for London locals and visitors alike to come together over a love of great food and we’re looking forward to creating a fun and vibrant family friendly atmosphere to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee while championing the wonderful food on offer from our traders – whether the best of British or unique international produce.”
