Cirencester Charter Markets

Market Place, Cirencester, UK

The Cirencester Charter Markets are among the oldest and most iconic markets in the Cotswolds, forming a central part of the town’s identity and commercial life. Held every Monday and Friday in Cirencester’s historic Market Place.
Cirencester’s trading heritage stretches back nearly a millennium. The Charter Market is recorded as early as 1086 in the Domesday Book, marking it as one of the oldest chartered markets in England. This long history reflects the town’s enduring role as a regional hub for trade, agriculture, and craftsmanship.
Over the centuries, these market rights protected local traders and ensured that Cirencester remained a focal point for economic activity. Today, the Town Council continues this stewardship, licensing and regulating markets to preserve their quality, safety, and historical integrity.
The Charter Markets take place twice weekly:
• Mondays: 10:00am – 3:00pm
• Fridays: 9:00am – 3:00pm (times may vary)
